The Pipe Burst

The Pipe Burst

The pipe burst, showering
the bathroom with scalding water.
Forcing me to flee naked into the cold.
I quickly grabbed my bathrobe,
and an old dim flashlight,
to scurry under the house,
and turn off the main valve.
Covered in mud in the dark,
I found myself looking at stars,
the blueness of the sky,
and the violet hue of sunrise,
silhouetting the mountain range.
The smell of coffee wafted outside,
as a pan faced barn owl swept by.

Can We Learn?

Can We Learn?

This is an adaptation and update of the song, Summer of 64. This song concerned the Mississippi Civil Rights movement. It expressed the need to make real efforts to overcome injustice, oppression, and resistance to constructive change. Recent events should have awakened all of us to the need to continue making such efforts in the face of violence, voter suppression, attacks on the civil equality of women. and marriage equality there is no reason to be idle and no time…

The Bell Tolls

At the nape of your neck.. my pale fingernails linger in thin curls..

softly pressing you into my cheek..

your ear to mine..

around my shoulders you rest..

tender grazing on soft sheets..we wrap each other..

We hold and console…

carefully concealing one another..

tightly safeguarding…

At times, I am underneath you.. hiding and retreating, guarded, kept warm and protected

At times, I become your wings..stretching myself…

Stuck

I never meant for you to stay…But…you have.

I never thought you to be.. what I wanted…I only planned for you to be (just) what I needed for a short time. You were meant to be a band-aid, a temporary vice, a handkerchief ..a meaningless yet special secret.

You were meant to stay invisible once away from my view…but now (YOU) are all I see.

I never really meant for you to stay…But… you …

In Memory of One Who Has Fallen

In Memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 44th Anniversary of his Assassination

I sit and remember when I first heard the news;
Though eleven thousand miles away I still felt the bruise,
An authentic hero had been shot down in cold blood.
And my mind still reels at the emotional flood.

When I wonder, will we ever see his like again?
He gave us so much; like few who have ever been.
I wrestle with loss; I struggle for breath;
For what was taken from…

Crying Woolf

She scours the shore for the perfect stones,
Earth’s little party favors
Strewn, spewn from the river as confetti for the landlocked.
No rush…she has time.

Each must be perfect
Each must be chosen

Sharp eyes must seek out those that contain
Infinitesimal bits of her heart…
Her youth
Her Soul

The weight of her pockets sag under her collection
The weight of her life sags under her past
The weight of her heart sags under her breast.
Must rush…she has no time.

She names them for those who have stolen…

Ring Those Bells

Ring Those Bells

belltower

Ring those bells, ye brethren
From any city that screams,
Ring those bells from the cemeteries
Across the valleys and streams,
For they’re deep and they’re wide
And they’re on the wrong side
While time is running backward
And so is the tide.

Ring those bells St. Peter
While the fierce winds blow,
Ring those bells with a stern hand
So all the land will know.
That it’s crunch hour now
For the who and the how
And the sun is going down
Upon each sacred cow.

Ring those bells Sweet Martha,
For the poor man’s son,
Slain in youth…

A Child Is Dead!

A Child Is Dead!

Breathes there a person with soul so dead
As never to oneself have said
No matter what excuses may be pled
A child is dead!
In a seemingly prosperous Florida town
A young black boy was wantonly gunned down
The police were summoned and quickly came
But the lad lay dead all the same.
Must we not all wonder why?
A happy, friendly child had to die.
He went to the store and was coming back
Then was slain for the crime of “walking while black”
For too long this has…

And I Ain’t a Woman!

When men are overheard to say
A woman needs to be helped and guided
Even with steel wands shoved inside them
Or having only to prove they can tell when they are raped
No man ever gave birth or breast fed
or struggled with a rapist or the incestuous aggression of degenerates
And I ain’t a woman!

     Look at them.
Look at their arms!
They have plowed and planted
and gathered into barns
and no man could do more.
And I ain’t a woman!

   They could work as much
and eat as much as any man–
when they could get to it–
and bear the…

Mockingbird has a Death Wish

A mockingbird perches
on the highest limb of a young redwood.
Mimicking the other birds,
as well as the cats, cars, and tractors.
Fiercely defending its nest.
This tiny bigmouth has become a pest.
Tempting me to take the bells
off the necks of my friendly feline pets.
Let all hell break loose
and put this annoying avian to rest.
Yet, that might upset
the delicate balance of my entire back yard.
A mockingbird perches

The Color of Loving

Mildred Jeter was of African American and Native American descent, and Richard Loving was a white man. They fell in love and eventually married in Washington D. C. in June 1958.

Married in Washington, D C

Capital of this land so free

They returned to their home state

Where a vicious law lay in wait

The Sheriff broke into their house

And charged them as each other’s  spouse

He would not listen to their cries

And enforced a law based…

The Highest Patriotism

As Dr. King said in 1967, “We believe the highest patriotism demands the ending of the war and the opening of a bloodless war to final victory over racism and poverty.”  Then, as it is now, ensuring that society works for ALL is the highest form of patriotism. This launched the “Poor People’s Campaign.”  Unfortunately for us all, Dr. King was murdered just a year later and the march he hoped for never happened. The Economic Bill of Rights never…

I, Woman!

“A nod to our Sweet Half;  Sometimes we cannot live with them,  but we cannot live without them either!”

Pads and bags
And no face paint
I like my tears
With no trace

Head held up high
You’ll not
Hear me sigh
And NO,
I do not faint!

Glass ceilings long
Have been shattered
I’ll no longer be
Used
Abused
Or battered

You like them heals:
Try to wear them
And walk a mile,
Ride the highs and lows
Of living
Yet
keep on a smile!”

I gave you love
I gave you shelter
And shiny moments
To remember

I am your sister
I am your wife
I am…

Here comes the rain!

Clench your teeth
Clean your gutters
Here comes the rain!

Beavers are
Upstream
Getting fat
Building
More dams
While you and I
Gather
Our humble numbers
Shout: Justice!
Scream
They are busy
Cloning
Uncle Sams

“Look at them fools
Look at
The small critters
We run them
No hands
No tools
Only sweet talk
They gave us
All the keys
We will
Skip dotting the ‘I’s
And sell them
Fakes of crossed tees
Streets full of
Silhouettes in chalk”

Tighten your belts
Here comes the pain
In the land of crazies
What’s the use?
How vain
To be sane?

Clench your teeth
Clean your gutters
Here comes the rain!

“It is a time for martyrs now, and if I am to be one, it will be for the cause of brotherhood. That’s the only thing that can save this country.”

Malcolm X 19 February 1965 Gone now forty-seven years, RIP

Two days after making the above comment, Malcolm was shot down by assassins from the Nation of Islam. In this he anticipated Dr. King, who asserted, “I may not get there with you” on the…

In and out my life you stomp…
in Combat Boots

On the bed I lay…On the bed I stayed. I don’t think I have ever been in that room and not been on the bed.

You danced on my dreams and goals… in combat boots.

I guess it would’ve have been an even fight if I had a machete and arsenal of ammunition. But, I wore pastel tutu-skirts and converse chucks. I liked glitter and sugar dust, feathered on every part of me.

If you can’t hold me right, don’t try to hold me at all.

I don’t need you to love me cause I wouldn’t know what it was… if you did.

I just need you to pack and unwrap me every time you see me. Delicately remove my bow, gently loosen the tape, carefully release the wrapping paper, softly lift the lid, tenderly pull back the tissue, and with an “Ooh Ahh” from you lips; patiently lift me and pull me close. Lovingly hold me tight..(just for a moment)

Now, quick…

From a Bridge to a Dream

On a wooden bridge in a New England clime

With  many shots fired that echo through time

Founded on equality, liberty, and inalienable rights

But ripped, torn and tested by sectional fights

Saved by a leader whose life was then lost

Then conquering a continent at an incredible cost

Waging and winning wars both hot and cold

Struggling for principles and purposes hallowed of old

We have been at this for 236 years

We’ve experienced triumphs and shed many tears

There are no more walls in my house.
I hang my pictures on the air.
My carpet is made of grass and moss.
My bed is the corn husks of your heart.
Your mind is the fire for my stove.
I cook my soup with your words.
I have no need for plates or bowls,
As I dine on the wisdom of your soul.
I have no need for tinted windows,
Nor drawn curtains and closed shutters.
I have no roof, no floor, no doors.
And thanks to you,…
