You Won't Be Home Tonight

You Won’t Be Home Tonight

The minutes tick by
But I don’t believe
The hands of the clock
Have moved at all
The night is still
The fire is banked
Even the house has
Settled for the night
The only thing that’s
Missing now is you

The phone rings
Shattering the silence
I know that ring tone
And I know you
Won’t be home tonight

I wonder how
You’ll feel
When I don’t
Pick up your call
I find that really
I don’t even care

And by the way
You’ll find your key
No longer will unlock
My door
Your bags are packed
And lying in the drive
Along with every gift
You ever gave me
Perhaps your new
Inamorata
Will take you in

I know you won’t
Believe me
But I’m over you
The flame that
Burnt so brightly
Once
Has flickered
And gone out

In time my heart
Will mend
And you’ll go on
To hurt somebody
Else
But I won’t know
And I don’t care
Because next time
It won’t be me

I began writing poetry in my early 20s, and then put it aside and forgot it. Then a couple of years ago, I suddenly began writing ~ about everything under the sun ~ and I began to write poetry again. Or perhaps I should say channel more than write, since I feel that I am merely the conduit for some of the pieces I write. Those are the best of times, when the words flow, and those are the words which speak to others. Wish I could live in that state all the time!

  2. Wonderfully written. Many will read this and recognize the sentiment and the emotions underlying the words. Well done!
