Thinking about you today in a time-warped collage
Actually I was thinking about that day on the boat
All of us there, friends together for years and bonded
We were on Connor’s cabin cruiser, mostly drinking
Well I didn’t, unless you count that watermelon saturated
In some Grand Marnier for the mariners wanting a buzz
And a good one I had as I climbed the ladder to the flat roof height
Connor had speakers blasting great sounds that floated down the river
The breeze was gentle and the music sounded so good with ZZ Top and
I kinda forget the others ‘cause I really was buzzed but I danced and
Then others joined and I remember laughing, dancing, and singing to
The chorus of some song with all of us out of tune but tuned in together
And right before my eyes you took off all your clothes, stared at me
So hard that I couldn’t hear the music anymore and I felt so terribly sad
You smiled, with teeth yellowed by too much unfluoridated pot and then
There was your belly, large from all that beer you drank alone in dark bars
“What was it you wanted?” I recalled that from your favorite Dylan song
Sounding shallow on the water as my buzz drifted behind us in the wake

Conveying emotions through word images is something I have long loved. I describe it as word-painting, sometimes Impressionistic like Monet and sometimes bold and obtuse like Picasso.

What a vivid image of ‘hard rock’
“So hard that I couldn’t hear the music anymore and I felt so terribly sad…”
What a transitional sentence! Powerful and makes me so glad I never drank beer alone in dark bars!
And I love this ending…
“What was it you wanted?” I recalled that from your favorite Dylan song
Sounding shallow on the water as my buzz drifted behind us in the wake…”
Dear Tolbert, thanks so much for your kindness. Isn’t funny, even strange, how one image of someone can change our perception of them for a lifetime.
