“The future of this republic is in the hands of the American voter.” Therefore, actions to deprive or deny any American voter the right to vote, imperils the survival and success of government of the people, by the people, and for the people on this earth.”

Until the voting rights of Dark friends: mothers, fathers, daughters or sons are every bit as important as the voting rights of Light friends: mothers, fathers, daughters and sons

We who believe in justice must not rest.
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

That which matters the most is that we have a chance to work with people
Passing on the message that has been passed on to you and me

We who believe in justice must not rest.
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

To me young people come first; they can find courage where we’d fail
So we must shed some light as they carry us through the gale

We who believe in justice must not rest.
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

The older we get the more we must know the secret of our going on
Is putting the reins in the hands of younger people, who can run against the storm

We who believe in justice must not rest.
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

We need not clutch for power, nor shine the light just on you and me
We need to be in the number that rise and fight against tyranny

We who believe in justice must not rest.
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

Struggling alone doesn’t mean a whole lot, we should by now realize
So teaching others to get out and vote is the only chance our struggle survives

We must win people a voice and that voice must be heard
At times it might be quite difficult, but we cannot surrender to the absurd

We who believe in justice must not rest
We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won

This is a 2012 update of the Civil Right’s Anthem – Ella’s Song. Ella Baker was an important, but not especially celebrated civil rights activist during the height of that great time in American history. She truly stated: “Remember, we are not fighting for the freedom of the Negro alone, but for the freedom of the human spirit a larger freedom that encompasses all mankind.”

With the return of virulent reactionary efforts to deny people of color, poor people, and young people equal and unimpaired voting rights, it is not freedom that is directly endangered, but the very foundation of a just political order. The threat now is even more severe and pernicious than it was in the hallowed days of the struggle because efforts to deprive people of their voting rights are not confined to a small geographic region and the targets of deprivation and suppression are not limited to a small segment of the electorate. The Republican Party in 2012 is engaged in an attack on government by the consent of the governed that constitutes a clear and present danger to the survival and success of the United States as a constitutional republic.

  1. Nice Larry. We do have to fight. It was just over a hundred years ago that women couldn’t vote. We have to stay strong. :)

      Thanks Dani!

” We do have to fight.” Truer words have rarely been spoken. For all who have been kept out or pushed out, or left out, we do have to fight. We who believe in justice must not rest until it’s won!

Some people don’t seem to enjoy things or value their rights to the full unless they know a lot of other people have been left out of the process or deprived of the pleasure. In my experience, such people are almost always self-described conservatives or Republicans.

      Thanks again!

      Larry
